Back to Basics
High trends are all very well but sometimes we have to get back to basics. Creating a canvas of perfect skin from which to add your make-up is essential. Choose a shade that’s suited to a winter pallor and try before you buy. Sisley products get my vote and the Phyto Teint Eclat oil free long-lasting foundation is a winner. At £56 it’s not the most affordable available but perfection doesn’t come cheap. If you prefer a tinted moisturiser, it doesn’t get much better than Terry Eclat de Rose Sheer Tinted Moisturiser, £58, from www.spacenk.com.
Use a brush to add to the perfect finish such as No 7 Foundation Brush, Boots, £11, and have an effective concealer stick on stand by for those imperfect moments, £15, Clarins.
Goldmine
Go for gold this season with M.A.C’s Goldmine eyeshadow, £11, and Sunshine lipstick, £11.If you prefer a shimmer of gold rather than an all-over, Goldfinger approach, blend with the nude palettes around this autumn to add depth and texture.
Definition
Defining features requires a good eyeliner and RMK’s silver pot of creamy black gel paste, called Ingenious, comes with a push-up brush to draw the most smouldering of smokey eyes. The silver packet has Choose Me, Open Me, Take Me written all over which is an invitation not to be missed. RMK Ingeniouis Gel Eyeliner, £19, mail order 0800 123 400. If you prefer a pencil try Bobbi Brown’s Creamy Black Eye Pencil, £14, John Lewis.
False Eyelashes
Lashes again but this time the enhanced kind or, if you like, falsies. Used artfully, false eyelashes can add extra allure to even the most pedestrian of peepers. These 2true Glamour Lashes, from Superdrug, add volume, are easy to wear and suitable for contact lens wearers. At £1.95 a pair you can afford as many as you like. Max Factor’s False Lash Effect mascara gives you the effect without the faff, £10.99, Boots.Mother Earth
Autumn seems an appropriate time to get all earthy as the trees turn to russet gold, the sun fades and the soil loosens up as rain falls. Forest greens are on the autumn agenda and we are all to be turned into wood nymphs and woodland goddesses with the help of this trio of verdant eyeshadows. Bobbi Brown Forest Shimmer Eyeshadow, £14, John Lewis; M.A.C Strike a Pose eyeshadow, £11, M.A.C, Cambridge, and Max Factor Earth Spirits eyeshadow, £4.45, Boots.
Feeling Fruity
Plums make their mark on lipsticks this season
so get fruity. Dark plum-coloured lips sit dramatically well on winter white skin.
Keep lips soft and supple with Clinique’s
Vitamin C Lip Smoothies, £13.50,
No 7, Bloom lipstick, £10,
Boots,Gosh Perfect Plum lipstick, £4.89, Superdrug.
Purple Haze
Indigo played a big part on the catwalk this season and accent colours of luscious purple contrast nicely with the black and grey that is so on-trend. This emerges in make-up too and no fashionista will be without her purple nail varnish and eyeliner. Gosh Gasoline purple glitter nail varnish, £4.89, Superdrug and Urban Decay purple Empire cream eyeliner, £14, Boots.
Blackout
Black is back big time but
think more sophisticated Parisienne Left Bank
than rock goth. Not for
the fainthearted but truly
on trend, M.A.C Glimmerglass lipsgloss in Blackware, £14 (available from October)
and M.A.C Multi-Use Cream for cheeks,
lips or eyes £12.50, M.A.C. Cambridge.
Trip the Light Fantastic
Good lighting can hide a multitude of sins and so can artful make-up. Guerlain’s Precious Light Rejuvenating Illuminator, £26.50, department stores, can turn back time and give skin the kind of glow we all want. Pigments in the complex illuminate light so when the formula is applied to different parts of the face it highlights your best features and helps hide lines and dark spots.
Don’t leave home without one.
Vamp it Up
Think Hollywood starlet meets Eighties glamour model and you are getting there. Clash your lip colours and make yourself a big mouth. Barry M cerise pink lipstick, £4.25, red cherry glitter lip gloss, £4.25, from Superdrug and Boots.
